Difference Between In Stock and Out of Stock

Volusion allows you to track a product's stock quantities by using the Stock Status field in a product's Advanced Info > Stock section. If you enter any quantity into this field (including 0 and negative quantities), each time this item is purchased your store will automatically subtract one from the Stock Status value.

If this field is left blank, however, the system considers the product to have *unlimited* stock and is therefore always in stock.

If you enter a quantity into this field and then then decide that you want to use the unlimited stock feature instead, you need to go into the product page and enter the word "NULL" in the Stock Status field. (Note this cannot be done from the All Products table: an error message is displayed if you enter "NULL" in a field in the Stock Status column).

You can use this feature with two configuration variables, the Display Stock Status and Display Current Stock Quantity.

If you have Display Stock Status enabled:

  • Stock Status: In Stock will be displayed if Stock Status is 1 or more
  • Stock Status:(Out of Stock) will be displayed if Stock Status is 0 or less.
  • Nothing is displayed if the Stock Status was left blank or has been cleared using "NULL"

If you have Display Current Stock Quantity and Display Stock Status enabled:

  • Quantity in Stock: nnn will be displayed if Stock Status is 1 or more
  • Quantity in Stock:(Out of Stock) will be displayed if Stock Status is 0 or less.
  • Nothing is displayed if the Stock Status was left blank or has been cleared using "NULL"

Nothing is displayed if you only have Display Current Stock Quantity checked.

Both variables are found at Inventory > Products when you select All Products Settings from the Settings dropdown. Show
