New SEO Features in Winter 09

The 7/28/10 update of Volusion Winter '09 significantly upgrades the capability and power of our SEO features. These include:

  • all .asp pages can be individually configured for SEO meta tags
  • pages, products, categories and articles no longer need all three SEO tags defining. As long as one of the meta tag fields (title, keywords or descriptions) is present, meta tags will be enabled.
  • for products and categories meta tagging is enabled even if all the SEO fields are left blank. The product/category name is  used for the Meta Tag Title field in each case.

Meta Tagging Individual ASP Pages

Previously you could only apply one set of meta tags to all pages (other than categories, projects and articles) in your store. With this release you can apply separate sets of tags to all the named ASP pages:

Each page will default to the Meta Tag Title shown above, but this can be over ridden and additional keyword and description fields added as described below.

You can also set up default tags that will be set up for pages where the corresponding fields are blank.

To set up meta tags for a named ASP page:

  1. Click on Marketing > SEO.
  2. In the Add Meta Tags section, click on the name of the page to be tagged (or Default Values if you want to change the defaults.)Show
  3. On the Easy Mode tab, enter the Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords as appropriate.
  4. As previously, advanced users can click on the Advanced tab and instead enter the meta tag code they want to appear on the page in the Meta Tags Override field. This will override anything entered on the Easy Mode tab.

Important note: Since any text entered in this field for the Default Value will override Easy Mode field entries, as well as entries in all left-hand menu selection fields and corresponding fields on Product, Category, and Article records, this should be used with caution. Show

Advanced users can still use the Globally Appended Meta Tags field to enter additional meta tag code to appear on every page.

Improved Product, Category and Article Meta Tagging

Previously you needed to fill in all three fields for Meta Tag Title, Meta Tag Description and Meta Tag Keywords for tagging to be enabled for a product, category or article. Now pages are tagged for products and categories even if these fields are left blank. (Articles need at least one field to be entered)

For products, the Product Name is automatically applied to the Meta Tag Title. For categories, the Category Name is automatically applied to the Meta Tag Title. If you enter anything in the Meta Tag Title field in either case, this data will override this.

Robot Meta Tags

Advanced users can now disable the Robots Meta Tags and use only the robots.txt file to permit/disallow search engine agents from indexing their site by checking the Enable Robots Meta Tags box. Show

Click on the Click here to modify your robots preferences link to access this option.

Section title change

The section title on the Marketing > SEO page is now titled SEO Friendly URIs instead of Enable SEO. Show

Issues when Upgrading To Winter '09

If you upgrade from V05 to W'09, you will need to check your meta tag settings on the Marketing > SEO page. Because there are now default values for all pages, you may need to clear these fields and enter more specific tags after upgrading.
