VIDEO: Mobile Commerce (1/2): How to Optimize Your Store for Mobile Devices

With the number of mobile shoppers at an all-time high, providing an optimal storefront experience for all devices can be a challenge. That's why Volusion offers responsive templates that are just as friendly to mobile traffic as desktop traffic. There's one installed on all stores by default, with additional options to check out. For more information, see our video called "Responsive Templates."

If you're not using a responsive template, you can turn on our Mobile Commerce feature to set up a special mobile-friendly version of your store. To get started, log in to your Admin Area, go to Design > Mobile, and set the Mobile Storefront switch to On. This will activate the mobile-optimized browsing experience, letting your shoppers view categories and product details in a simplified format. If you don’t have a mobile device to test with, you can view the optimized storefront by clicking Preview under the applied mobile theme.

To offer a mobile-optimized checkout experience, set the Mobile Checkout switch to On. This feature is recommended for US-based merchants who accept one or more of the four major credit cards or Paypal Express. Once Mobile Checkout is enabled, your customers can complete their entire shopping process on a mobile site.

There are several ways you can customize your mobile storefront and checkout pages; one of the first things you’ll want to do is customize your logo. Go to Design > Logos and locate the More Logos section. You may have already applied your primary logo as your mobile logo. If so, you can either leave it in place, or swap it out for a custom one. Just click the upload icon or drag the file into the drop zone. The same applies if you don’t yet have a mobile logo uploaded. We recommend an image 200 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall.

You can also customize the names of fields and buttons that occur throughout the mobile checkout process. To view and modify the list of current field names, click Customize under the Mobile Checkout theme, then select Language. You can enter alternate text for any of these fields, then click Save

One field you might want to modify is Contact Info in the Footer section. By default, the field is blank. When you enter a phone number or an email address here, the information appears at the bottom of your checkout pages, giving shoppers an easy way to reach you.
