VIDEO: Getting Started (5/9): Preparing to Accept Payments

Hello again! This is Tony with Volusion. In our last episode, we talked about setting up your inventory. But for today’s episode we're gonna cover something even more important: getting paid!

You’ll need three things to accept payment on your site: an SSL certificate, a payment gateway, and a merchant account with a credit card processor. The SSL certificate protects the credit card and personal information shoppers type into their browsers before it’s sent over the internet.

The result is an encoded message that only the sender and the recipient know the key to, except the SSL does the encryption, transmission, and decryption for you automatically. If somebody who’s up to no good intercepts the transmission, they won’t be able to read the data.

Most payment processing services require an SSL, so you’ll need to buy one before you can sign up for credit card processing. If you don’t already have one, visit Volusion.com and go to Services > SSL Certificates. You have a few options to choose from, but our basic Volusion Pro SSL works fine for most merchants. Keep in mind that it can take up to two weeks to process and install, so it’s best to get the ball rolling early.

All SSL issuers have to make sure applicants actually own the domain names they’re trying to use their certificates on, otherwise scammers could use an issuer’s reputation and authority to impersonate websites and fool web browsers. This means that when you buy an SSL, our team has to look up domain name ownership details on the registration record. If the record is public, we send an email to the address listed – even if you ordered the SSL from our website using a different address – all you have to do is click a link in the email to verify your identity.

If the domain name record is private, we’ll send you a MyVolusion ticket asking you to create an email account that meets a few basic requirements. Then we’ll send an email to that address so you can verify your identity and approve the installation.

Next, you’ll need a payment gateway. A gateway uses your customers’ credit card information to check with their issuing banks and make sure the associated accounts have enough funds to cover their purchases. It works just like a credit card swipe terminal in a brick and mortar store, only instead of reading the magnetic stripe, it reads the details cardholders type on your checkout page.

The last thing you need is a merchant account. This is an account with a provider that acts as your financial institution, like a bank. They deposit funds from the transactions processed through your gateway into your checking account.

It’s possible to buy a payment gateway and merchant account separately, but in many cases, they’re packaged together. You get both with Volusion Credit Card Processing.

To sign up, visit Volusion.com, go to Services > Credit Card Processing > Apply Now, and fill out the form. Our team will contact you with further instructions to keep the process moving along. And if you already have a merchant account, just make sure your payment gateway is listed on our supported gateways page.

Another option is PayPal Express. I won’t go into detail about it here, but we have some great resources on our Support site that you should check out if you’re interested. We’ll give you a link at the end of this episode. Regardless of how you choose to accept payment, it’ll most likely take a week or two to get everything approved, so make sure you do this with plenty of time before your launch date.

Once you have your payment gateway, you’ll need to hook it up to your store. Log in to your Admin Area and go to Settings > Payment. Fill out your Gateway Country, then select your Gateway Name. If you don’t see your gateway in the list, select Other, and check out our resource on gateway integration at the end of this episode. We’re using Volusion Merchant Services for our store, so I’ll select that. Notice that two new fields have appeared: Authorize.Net API ID and Authorize.Net Transaction Key. You’ll find the appropriate values in your Volusion Credit Card Processing welcome package, so enter them, click Save, and you’re done. If you’re using a different gateway, you’ll see fields with different labels, and perhaps a different number of them. Our gateway integration resource will explain how to fill out this page regardless of which one you’re using, and your provider can help you find the right values for your account.
