How to Set Up Your Volusion FTP (SFTP) Account

File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, is a system that lets you transfer files between your computer and a remote server. Volusion uses a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) for increased protection, allowing you to upload images, videos, and other files to your online store over a secure channel.

Please note that FTP access is only available for Volusion stores with active hosting plans. If you’re using a 14-day free trial, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan before you can access your store's files via FTP.

In order to utilize FTP, you’ll also need an FTP client. An FTP client is a program that connects your computer to the server where your website's files are stored, and it accesses that server by using the account information you provide.

Creating an FTP Account

Before you can take advantage of your store's FTP capabilities, you'll need to create an FTP account in your myVolusion area. You can use the FTP account's credentials to access the files that make up your site. If you've already created an FTP account, see Using Your Volusion FTP Account for login instructions.

Create your Volusion FTP account by logging in to myVolusion.

  1. In your myVolusion account, click Manage FTP under my Stores.
  2. Choose the appropriate store domain name from the dropdown list at the top of the page.
  3. Click Add to create a new FTP account.
  4. The system will automatically generate an FTP account name and password.
  5. Edit your desired username and password*, and click Save.

Note that there are character requirements for both your username and your password. Each must be at least eight characters long, and must contain at least three of the following character types:

  • uppercase letter
  • lowercase letter
  • numeral
  • special character

Setting Permissions

Below the auto-generated user name and password for FTP is a dropdown menu labeled Folder that lists every directory or sub-directory your FTP account can access. By default, most folders will be assigned both read and write access. To change access settings, select a directory from the Folder menu and assign permissions as needed.

Summary

Once your account is created, you can follow the instructions outlined in Using Your Volusion FTP Account to log in using any standard FTP program. For troubleshooting tips, please see Troubleshooting Your Volusion FTP Connection.
